Is Your Camera Recording You Right Now? Laptops And Privacy

Your camera could be recording you right now and you might not even know it. Spyware programs can tap into web cameras, so if a device is connected to the internet, it could be accessible. If you're concerned about your personal privacy, there are some things you should know.

Accessing Laptop Web Cameras

There are many "hacking" solutions that are specifically designed to access web cameras. These solutions may scan for laptops that are vulnerable and may then access the camera using a backdoor software solution. Cameras are particularly popular targets because they can tell a criminal a lot about a person.

Laptops can show where a person lives and when they aren't at home, so they can be robbed. They can also take sensitive photos and videos, and be used to blackmail the individual. Sometimes high value individuals, such as CEOs, are targeted exactly for this purpose.

The "Red Light" May Not Be Enough

One of the easiest ways you can tell whether your camera is in use is to look for the red light. Every laptop camera has a light to the side of it to show when it's on, and not all software solutions can counter this. However, that may not be enough; some more advanced solutions can turn off the red light as well, so you'll never know that someone is watching or recording you.

Using an Antivirus Solution

Most hackers are using some type of malicious program to view your camera. Consequently, you can use an advanced antivirus solution in order to detect them. Antivirus solutions will scan your computer periodically for software that could be used to view your cameras. However, they can't always find new exploits that haven't been seen before, so they can't be relied upon 100%.

Protecting Yourself Requires a Privacy Shield

If software can't help you, what can? In fact, the solution to this problem is surprisingly easy and low tech. The best way to protect yourself from illicit recordings is a camera shield. A camera shield is just a thin bit of plastic that fits directly over the camera. There is no amount of hacking that can possibly get past the camera being physically covered when it's not in use. From there, you just need to remember to habitually cover it.

In a post-privacy world, it becomes more important to protect yourself when you can. Investing in a laptop webcam cover or laptop camera blocker is one of the first things you can do to protect yourself from unwanted intrusion.
